Montessori Sound Containers – Playful Training for the Sense of Hearing
The classic Montessori material promotes auditory perception, concentration, and attention in children aged 3 and over. By matching pairs of sounds, children learn to consciously perceive and distinguish sounds.

Benefits & learning objectives

  • Recognize sound pairs – Children match red and blue cylinders by sound
  • Strengthen the sense of hearing – Trains auditory perception and sound recognition
  • Cognitive development – Improves attention, concentration & memory
  • Varied exercises – Sorting by volume, working blindfolded, games in different rooms
  • Natural & safe – Made from high-quality wood, durable and child-friendly

How to play (short description)

  • A cylinder with a red lid and one with a blue lid contain the same sound.

  • Children shake the containers, compare the sounds, and find the matching pairs.

  • Progression: Sort by volume or play with eyes closed to train the sense of hearing even more intensively.

An adult uses three red and three blue pairs of sound containers that differ noticeably in sound. First, they shake a blue container. They then find the matching red container by shaking the containers. If the sounds match, both containers are set aside as a pair. Once all pairs have been found, the markings on the bottom are used to check whether the matching is correct. Each blue container has the same color marking as its red partner container.

The containers are then mixed again, and the child is asked to sort the pairs independently by sound. Once the child can confidently match three pairs, the number of containers is gradually increased until all six pairs are finally in use.

Variations:

  • The child sorts the containers by volume – from quiet to loud or vice versa.

  • The blue and red containers are distributed between two different rooms. One container is then shaken, and the child in the other room must find the container with the same sound.

  • For children with limited attention or who are easily distracted, it is recommended to carry out the exercise blindfolded so that their sense of sight is eliminated and it is easier to concentrate on listening.
